Kalyani Hiwale has taught Drama for over 15 years from Primary classes to IB Theatre Arts. She has been Head of Content for the Education wing of Theatre Professionals, planning and delivering the Drama Programmes in Schools. As a Drama Specialist, she focuses on training teachers to use drama in their classroom.
A graduate of the National School of Drama, New Delhi, with a specialization in Direction, Kalyani believes that working with drama is a magical and transformative process in the context of Education. Kalyani also works with issues of gender and sexuality through theatre and performance.
In 2006, she received a grant from Arts Network Asia, Singapore, for the project ‘My Sister, My Friend,’ exploring the lives of a eunuch from India and a transvestite from the Philippines.
She has used theatre workshops to empower victims of domestic violence, children afflicted with HIV, adolescent boys from the Govandi slums to challenge gender perceptions in society and several BMC schools.
When she is not out there influencing young minds, she runs her own theatre group, Actors’ Cult, in Mumbai. She has directed theatre shows for different corporate events and is also the Theatre Consultant at the Art Village, a collaborative space for artists in Karjat.
